A three-story building in Ita Faaji Market, Lagos Island Local Government Area, collapsed amid heavy rainfall on Thursday morning, causing panic in the community.
According to Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, the building was undergoing renovation when it collapsed at around 9 am.
Fortunately, the construction workers managed to escape unharmed. Adeseye confirmed that the incident occurred at 24 Binuyo Street, off Ita Faaji Market, and that the few artisans present at the site were safe.
Emergency personnel from Ebute Elefun Fire Station and other state agencies promptly responded to the scene. Although the exact cause of the collapse remains unknown, recovery efforts have been completed.
This unfortunate incident follows a similar tragedy in September 2023, where an 80-year-old woman lost her life when a staircase collapsed in a building in the Oyingbo area of the state.
The Lagos State Building Control Agency expressed condolences to the victims of the collapsed building and attributed the incident to non-compliance with vacation notices by the building's occupants. Emergency responders swiftly mobilized for rescue operations following the collapse.
