The United States launched airstrikes early Sunday on three nuclear facilities in Iran, marking a direct military intervention in Israel’s ongoing war against Tehran. President Donald Trump declared the sites “completely and fully obliterated,” warning of further attacks if Iran retaliates.
The Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites were hit using B-2 bombers and Tomahawk missiles, including 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs. Iran confirmed the strikes but denied any radiation leaks and vowed its nuclear program would continue. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the attack an act of war, stating that diplomacy had ended and the U.S. had crossed a red line.

In response, Iran launched 40 missiles at Israel, injuring over 80 civilians and damaging buildings in Tel Aviv. Israel retaliated with airstrikes on western Iran, escalating the conflict. President Trump acted without congressional approval, drawing criticism from lawmakers who cited constitutional concerns, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the move as a turning point.
Trump had previously held off on intervention in hopes of a diplomatic resolution, but reportedly shifted strategy after Israel’s earlier strikes weakened Iran’s defenses. Trump’s decision follows failed negotiations with Tehran, which had resumed under pressure from European mediators.

The International Atomic Energy Agency reported no increased radiation but continues to monitor the situation. Meanwhile, global leaders including U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the risks of full-scale regional war, urging restraint and diplomacy.
Iran’s allies, including Russia and Houthi rebels in Yemen, denounced the U.S. action, with calls for Muslim nations to unite against American-Israeli aggression. Tehran warned that any further attacks could trigger uncontrollable conflict. Iranian officials have also suggested that U.S. bases in the region are within missile range.
The situation remains volatile as both the U.S. and Israel prepare for the possibility of a protracted conflict. Human rights groups report at least 865 dead and over 3,000 wounded in the Iranian strikes launched by Israel in the past week. Trump is expected to address the nation further after a scheduled Pentagon briefing.
