U.S. Bureau of Prisons set to probe convicted fraudster Hushpuppi over viral birthday feast held in New Jersey jail (Video)
The United States Bureau of Prisons has announced an investigation into Ramon “Hushpuppi” Abbas, a convicted internet fraudster, following the circulation of a viral video allegedly depicting him hosting a feast within Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he is currently serving an 11-year sentence. The feast was purportedly in celebration of the birthday of social media influencer Tunde Adekunle, also known as Tunde Ednut, which took place on January 22, 2024.
In response to the viral video, the prison facility expressed its commitment to addressing the matter seriously. The facility informed the Nigerian online newspaper, Peoples Gazette, on Thursday night, February 1, that the "investigative department" would spearhead the inquiry to establish the veracity—or lack thereof—of the video's claims.
The video, which gained attention, showcased an elaborate spread of various foods, including jollof rice, pasta, and soda drinks, within what appeared to be a prison facility. A voice attributed to Hushpuppi was heard saying, “Tunde Ednut, you can see that we are celebrating you in our little way. Fried rice is ready, Tunde Ednut birthday celebration. Jollof loading, pasta is here as you can see,” as a person, hidden behind the camera, displayed the delicacies on a white table. The footage also revealed a grey double bunk and a bed with white sheets, reinforcing suspicions that the celebration took place within a U.S. jail.
Hushpuppi, aged 41, was convicted in 2022 for his involvement in a multimillion-dollar international fraud scheme. Arrested in Dubai and subsequently extradited to the U.S., he reportedly engaged in prison educational courses. He actively participated in cleaning prison facilities during the initial years of his incarceration, aiming to secure a reduced sentence.
However, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Los Angeles, on January 19, dismissed Hushpuppi’s appeal to review and reduce his 11-year sentence, despite citing his good behavior during his prison stay.
