Philadelphia police are actively searching for suspects involved in a fatal shooting that left a 77-year-old Uber driver dead and a 22-year-old passenger critically injured early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred outside Byblos Restaurant and Hookah Lounge, located in the 100 block of 18th Street, around 2 a.m.

According to investigators, surveillance footage shows the 22-year-old man saying goodbye to acquaintances and entering the backseat of a black SUV driven by the Uber driver, later identified as Olatunji Bolaji of Norristown. As he was getting into the vehicle, a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee pulled up behind them. Two men exited the Jeep and began a physical altercation with the younger man before at least one suspect opened fire, discharging four shots.

Police believe one bullet traveled through the headrest and fatally struck Bolaji in the back of the head. Despite being mortally wounded, Bolaji managed to drive the SUV a short distance to Chestnut Street, where the vehicle crashed into a light pole. He was found partially outside the driver’s seat and pronounced dead at the scene.

The 22-year-old passenger was struck in the arm, stomach, and chest. He was transported to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition.

Police say the suspects fled in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which may have Massachusetts license plates, last seen heading down Sansom Street. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts to track the vehicle and identify the assailants.

Bolaji’s family is grieving the senseless loss, describing him as a hardworking father doing his job to support his loved ones. A spokesperson for Uber expressed condolences and confirmed that the company is cooperating with law enforcement to help bring the perpetrators to justice.
