Wayne Lewis, the iconic singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and founding member of the legendary R&B group Atlantic Starr, has died at the age of 68. His passing was confirmed on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
A heartfelt statement from Atlantic Starr announced his death, reading: “It’s with great sadness we have to post the passing of Wayne Lewis on June 5, 2025. Please keep the family in your prayers and respect their privacy. #waynelewis #restinpeace #flyhigh Sunrise 4/13/1957 Sunset 6/5/2025.”
The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

Lewis was a pivotal force in the New York-based band Atlantic Starr, which he co-founded in 1976 in White Plains with his brothers David and Jonathan Lewis. Originally formed under the name Newban, the group changed its name before signing with A&M Records. They released their self-titled debut album in 1978, launching a career that would span decades and produce a string of beloved R&B and pop hits.
As both a lead vocalist and keyboardist, Lewis contributed to the band’s most memorable songs, including the No. 1 hit Always (1987), which became a staple at weddings and romantic occasions worldwide. He also helped pen and perform chart-toppers such as Secret Lovers (No. 3, 1985), Circles, Silver Shadow, Touch a Four Leaf Clover, Am I Dreaming, and Masterpiece.

Atlantic Starr became known for their smooth blend of R&B, soul, and pop, regularly climbing both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Lewis worked closely with legendary producer James Anthony Carmichael, contributing to the group’s signature polished, radio-friendly sound.
